How do you build an effective keyword list

Selecting the right keywords is a complicated process. It is however a very important process because it will determine whether you have many or few visitors through the organic search results received. In this article I am going deeper into selecting the right keywords and how you can best do.

When you start your search engine optimization, there are a few basic rules that you should know before you begin. The first thing you should do is to create a keyword list. There are several possibilities. The good opportunities provide a strategy for the long term will continue to work. If you use the wrong methods then you will see little to no results and you keep asking yourself always wonder what went wrong.

Know your site

To make a good keyword list to build your website you through and through. You must know what your site contains all and more importantly, what your site does not contain!

The first step is to brainstorm a list together with general keywords that apply to your website. When you open a perfume shop in Amsterdam has the temptation to number 1 with the keyword "perfume". Of course that is a start but it is probably too ambitious for a perfume shop in Amsterdam. It is therefore very important to keep your site well enough to know and with some keywords are derived from "perfume" and more in the direction out of your shop. A good way to achieve this is to take account of the following:

  1.     Location (Amsterdam Perfume, perfume shop Amsterdam)
  2.     Price (cheap perfume, perfume exclusive)
  3.     Type (men perfume, women perfume)

Expanding the list

You should now have a good list of keywords must have derived. The next step is to extend this list with a keyword tool.

Whenever you enter a keyword, the software will indicate how often looked at this keyword. It also gives direct multiple keywords where the entered keyword for coming.

The idea is that you go through the list of keywords that will return the software and it gives the interesting keywords pulls back. Paste it into eg Excel so you can edit them later.

Once you have cut and pasted all the keywords you list again after the keyword and determine whether it has to do with your site. That is why I said earlier that it is important that you are familiar with the site ...

Shrinking the keyword list

Now you have a very long keyword list. Now it is important to determine whether it is interesting to optimize these keywords. You do this by the number of queries compared to the number of pages that the search engines find on this keyword. You will thus see how much competition there is in this area. So you will need to know two variables for this study namely:

  •     The number of searches for a particular keyword
  •     The competition for the keyword.

Below you will find the method to the competition thoroughly examine:

Search in Google for your keyword

On the first page you go to find the last site where the keyword in the title and who is not related to a website with a page rank of 6 or higher. This is the page that you must defeat. When such a page does not exist it will be a lot easier to rank high.
Find out how many unique back links page rank of at least a one page with the keyword in the link text.

The above is a thorough method to the competition of a particular keyword to find. As long as you do not have access to software that automatically seeks out for you so that you will have to do by hand. Not a problem but it may take some time if all keywords have been studied.

The technique I am going to demonstrate uses the following query: intitle: "keyword" inanchor: "keyword". This will return the number of pages by using the two most important factors for high scores to know:

  •     The keyword appears in the title of the page
  •     The keyword is found in the links that point to this page

Here is a very good method to determine the competition:

Run the following query for each keyword from: inurl: keyword inanchor: keyword
Find the number of pages (top right) and paste it into a new Excel column beside the appropriate keyword, do so with each keyword.
In a new column, divide the number of competitors (the column that you created in step 2) by the number of searches.

Order now these last column from low to high.

What you have done is the percentage calculated competitors to search. Generally you want keywords that are searched more than there are competitors. So the closer the percentage to zero is more interesting is the keyword.

This method determines which words are most competitors but competition is not the only value that you will use a keyword or keyword on the final list will face.

Keyword layout

Keywords with a lot of competition might be of interest and need not be deleted. You just need to use something else. You have these words on webpages that links received from your homepage. These texts must link the "competition" contain keywords in groups of 2 or 3 in which the keywords very much alike as:

erotic perfumes, buy erotic perfumes, perfumes for men.

You see that I am speaking perfumes some time I could use. Keywords so that you do not de-list and you can use them to pages within your site to link to the keyword go.

Ready! You now have all the information you need to make an effective keyword list to build. Remember, a good keyword list is essential for a successful search engine optimization campaign!
